Act II
Opening Music
Carronvalia sits alone in her room, consulting the magic book.
Carronvalia - Each letter of my name amounts
To numbers which this table counts;
When put together, they shall tell
The number of the magic spell.
The number 3 means letter C;
The A as 1, so one plus three
Makes four, then 17 for R
Makes 21 in all so far.
Another R makes 38
And O makes 52, then. Great.
So 13 for the N is cast
And 65 shall be the last.
Suddenly the lights flicker and a cold wind blows through the room. Carronvalia observes the ghostly image of Julieanne standing at the foot of her bed. The pale apparition is dressed all in black. Her long black hair hangs lank and wet upon her shoulders.
Julieanne - Who calls me from my watery grave?
Who stirs me from the oceans waves?
I rest in sadness - I sleep in pain,
For cold is the water and heavy is my chain
Who art thou to invoke my wrath?
Who art thou to my fate so cast?
I sing defiance - I drown again,
For cold is the silence and heavy is my chain.
Who wakes me from Deaths domain?
Who frees me from his dismal reign?
I ask thy purpose - I ask thy name,
For cold is thy presence and heavy is my chain.
Carronvalia begins to tremble as the ghost walks towards her.
Carronvalia - Forgive me, poor creature,
I, too, share your fears.
My names Carronvalia -
Your tale stirs my tears.
I seek no great fortune,
But wish to be free
Of loans and such payments
That weigh down on me.
Julieanne - I once had that problem
But then all turnd well,
Until others envy
Became my hell.
Im sorry I scaird thee -
My names Julieanne.
I mean thee no trouble.
Please, friend, take my hand.
Julieanne offers her hand in friendship. Carronvalia steps towards her, but jumps up and screams as she touches her hand.
Carronvalia - Your hand is as cold as Death!
Julieanne - My blood has frozen - my flesh has turnd to ice.
Carronvalia - The coldness pervades your breath.
Julieanne - Thy hand warms my fingers and thy words do bring me life.
Carronvalia - Then take full comfort in my embrace
Julieanne - but show no pity in thy face.
Carronvalia - Oh! You were so ill usd.
Julieanne - Oh! How my life has been abusd!
They embrace - a tear falling down Carronvalias face.
Julieanne - Thou shalt win the lottery
And yet no ills shall befall thee,
But when thou receivst thy pay,
Destroy the book with no delay.
If on useless follies, thy money thou doth spend,
Thou must with my angerd soul contend
And if any other tries the code,
They shall share my fate and Deaths abode.
Julieanne turns to go, but looks back one last time.
Julieanne - Farewell, my dear sister -
In thy life Ill live on.
Carronvalia - Farewell, my dear friend -
Ill mourn thee, when you are gone.
Julieanne - Farewell this cruel world -
I go to rest in peace.
Carronvalia - Farewell the chains of Death -
I pray that your pain shall cease.
The candles blow out as Julieanne disappears. The curtains close for the end of Act II.
